Am starting to gear up for raising a lot of organic vegetables this summer, in hopes of saving money and being able to eat what I like to, not only in the summer, but through preserving food for the winter when Vermillion, South Dakota becomes a local food desert.
One of the temptations that comes up right away with gardening is going out and spending a lot of money on supplies. I’m trying to take baby steps, not just to be frugal but also to keep existing stuff out of the landfill where I can.
Last summer, I was given a bunch of garden tools rescued from yard sales. Pictured is my newest acquisition, liberated from Vermillion’s Civic Council thrift store this past week. Now that it’s been oiled and sharpened, it cuts really well.
Later today, I’m starting parsley seeds indoors. Gotta get the jump on our relatively short growing season.
